Documentary Africa (DocA) has a history of supporting African filmmakers across various stages of their projects. With the launch of the Shoot Your Short, we are excited to start on our venture into supporting short-form documentary content. This year, DocA will be awarding grants valued at $5,000.
The Documentary Africa (DocA) Grants are designed to support filmmakers across the African continent in telling authentic African stories through the medium of documentary films. Recognizing the power of documentaries to capture real-life narratives and foster social change, the DocA Grants aim to provide financial assistance, mentorship, and resources to filmmakers who are focused on producing high-quality, impactful documentaries. These grants help amplify African voices and highlight diverse perspectives on issues ranging from social justice, human rights, culture, and history to environmental challenges and political movements.
The program supports both emerging and established filmmakers, offering various types of grants such as development, production, and post-production funding. In addition to financial support, recipients are provided with guidance from experienced industry professionals, helping them hone their storytelling skills, navigate the challenges of documentary filmmaking, and ensure their films reach wide audiences. The initiative also encourages cross-border collaboration and fosters a community of African documentary filmmakers committed to using film as a tool for education, advocacy, and transformation. Eligibility Criteria For The Documentary Africa (DocA) Grant:
To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be African producers of African nationality residing on the continent.
- Have completed at least one previous film.
- Commit to completing the short film within a year from receiving the grant.
- Ensure the film is less than 20 minutes in duration.
