Doctorate Scholarship at German Federal Foreign Office

Objective:

The German Federal Foreign Office Scholarship programme aims to foster research projects within the framework of doctoral programmes. These scholarships are generously funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

Who Can Apply?

Eligibility criteria include:

Pursuing a doctorate,

Completion of a Master’s degree or Diploma, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor’s degree, at the latest by the start of the funding period,

Already holding a completed PhD (postdoc).

Applicants cannot apply if they are completing their entire doctorate at a German university.

What Can Be Funded?

The scholarship provides funding for a research project or a course of continuing scientific education at a state or state-recognized institution of higher education, or a non-university research institute in Germany. The project must be conducted in coordination with an academic adviser in Germany.

Duration of the Funding:

Funding is available for a period ranging from one month to a maximum of six months. Applicants must specify the desired funding duration in their application. The final funding period will be determined during the selection process by a committee, considering the applicant’s work plan.

The grant is non-renewable.

Applicants should plan to complete their funded stays by March 2025 at the latest.

Value:

Monthly stipend of euros 1,300 for doctoral candidates and postdocs.

euros 934 for those not yet pursuing a doctoral degree.

Payments toward health, accident, and private legal responsibility coverage cover.

Travel allowance.

Subsidy for additional costs related to disability or chronic illness, not covered by other funding providers.

Green Mobility Top Up (Support for climate-pleasant travel) or partial compensation of carbon offset bills for air travel.

Selection Process:

An independent selection committee evaluates applications based on:

A well-planned and convincing research or training project.

Academic achievements.

Additional submitted documents demonstrating the applicant’s professional aptitude or extracurricular commitment.

The application deadlines are updated annually in the second quarter. Typically, they align with the previous year’s schedule. For the current year, the deadlines are as follows:
