The Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP) stands as a beacon of opportunity for exceptional scholars hailing from selected countries who lack alternative means to fund their postgraduate studies. Established in 1969 by His Highness the Aga Khan, this esteemed program has provided support to over 1,000 students, embodying a legacy of educational empowerment and global impact.

Award recipients are meticulously chosen through a rigorous global application process, emphasizing academic excellence, financial need, and leadership potential. The AKF ISP offers a limited number of new awards each cycle, with applications for the 2024-2025 cycle slated to open in early January 2024 and close on March 31, 2024.

Eligibility for the AKF ISP is contingent upon meeting stringent criteria, including exceptional academic records, possession of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, genuine financial need, and admission to a reputable postgraduate institution. Preference is accorded to young professionals under 30 years of age, who demonstrate strong leadership potential, professional acumen, and noteworthy extracurricular or entrepreneurial achievements.

The application process is facilitated by local units of the Aga Khan Foundation, Aga Khan Education Services, or Aga Khan Education Board, with applicants directed to liaise with the appropriate country-level entity to obtain and submit their application forms. It is imperative to adhere to deadlines and ensure completeness, as late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.

The structure of AKF ISP awards comprises a combination of grant and loan, wherein recipients are required to repay 50 percent of the award amount. Scholarships for Master’s studies cover the entire duration of the degree course, while PhD scholarships are awarded for the initial two years, after which students are expected to secure funding from alternative sources. The award encompasses tuition fees and living expenses, with the exception of international travel, family expenses, and other personal costs.

Recipients must maintain good academic standing and ongoing financial need throughout their postgraduate program to retain their AKF ISP award. The repayment period for the loan component spans five years, with a cumulative service charge applied annually. A guarantor is mandated to co-sign the loan agreement, ensuring accountability and commitment to academic success.

The Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme epitomizes a commitment to educational excellence, global citizenship, and sustainable development, empowering scholars to realize their academic aspirations and effect transformative change in their communities and beyond.
