Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries (research funding)

This scholarship opportunity is available for candidates from selected developing countries, offering support for a joint Ph.D. program with Ghent University and a partner university in the South. The program encourages research relevant to development and is aimed at candidates at the early stages of their Ph.D. studies.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates must be nationals of and come from selected developing countries (refer to the provided country list).
  • Proposals must be collaboratively submitted by the candidate, a supervisor at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university in the South.
  • No specific field restrictions, but preference given to topics relevant to development.
  • Only degree students pursuing a (joint) Ph.D. at Ghent University are eligible; exchange students are not eligible.
  • The program targets students at the beginning of their Ph.D., with a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research remaining at the start of the fellowship.

Gender Diversity Incentive:

Ghent University aims to encourage female researchers to apply. A supervisor from Ghent University is allowed to endorse up to two candidates per call, on the condition that they represent different genders.

Co-Funding

Co-funding is mandatory, and specific details can be found in the call documents.

Mobility Scheme

A mandatory mobility scheme is in place, requiring research stays of 3-12 months at Ghent University, with at least 24 months of locally funded research in the South between the first and last Ghent University stays.

Exceptions to Mobility

Applicants may request exceptions under certain circumstances, such as completing a local Ph.D. study program, field research, or prior funded Ph.D. study periods.

Funding Details

The Ph.D. scholarship at Ghent University covers 24 months.

Ghent University promoters receive a bench fee and a travel budget to cover operational and travel costs for both the student and promoters.

Application Deadline

20th  February 2024. Applicants seeking exceptions to the mobility scheme must submit their requests to the research administration of Ghent University before January 19, 2024.
